PASTOR’S COMMENTS

This Wednesday, ASH WEDNESDAY,    is the first day of the Church’s 40 day call to Spiritual Renewal.  Statistically, more people come to Mass on Ash Wednesday than on Christmas or Easter. As a pastor I often wonder what is it that draws people out of their routines to come to church on this day.

The least important thing about Ash Wednesday is getting ashes. However, the most important thing is returning to Christ to start over again, or to deepen our connection with Him in our daily life.

To do that, the Church calls us to Prayer, Fasting, and Works of Mercy for those less fortunate than ourselves.

To Pray is to humbly admit we need Christ in our lives, our homes, our hearts and our world.

To Fast is to give up our unhealthy dependence on food, alcohol, smoking, the casino or whatever leads our choices and thoughts away from the path of Christ.

To perform Works of Mercy reminds us that we are all God’s children who are here on earth to help one another in Christ’s name.

There will be a Special collection at all Masses on Ash Wednesday to benefit local food pantries, soup kitchens, and the homeless.  We ask you to please give SACRIFICIALLY.

Please note weekday services in Lent are at 12:10 PM and Friday evenings at 7PM we observe the Way of the Cross and Benediction.

Altar Servers Needed

Can you fill this very important position?

It is an honor and a special privilege for a young person to serve at Mass. Parents should encourage their youngsters to participate in this very special ministry.

If you will be entering Grade 4 or above in September, and you wish to serve St. Robert’s in this very special way, please ask your mom or dad to call the Parish Office at 232-5600 for more information. Serving at Mass would fulfill your CVS hours in Grades 7, 8, 9 and 10.

LENT 2012

Lent begins on Wednesday, February 22nd this year.  As always, this time of renewal is one which calls us to put on the Heart and Mind of Christ in all our relationships with one another.  It is also a season of spiritual honesty and personal change.

The main focus of all we do, the sacrifices we undertake, the extra time for prayer and good works, are all aimed at celebrating a stronger relationship with the Risen Christ of Easter.

All these outward disciplines and spiritual practices are designed to chip away our resistance to change and spiritual growth, and will hopefully lead us to a deeper surrender to God’s Loving Will seen most personally in Christ our Redeemer.

LENTEN RULES FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

During Lent all Catholics over the age of 14 are called to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and ALL the Fridays of this season in order to recall Christ’s total sacrifice of Himself on the Cross.

Fasting means that people 18 years old to age 60 strive not to eat between meals and aim at eating less so that those who are in need may have more.  In other words, we should contribute the money saved through fasting to the poor box, the rice bowl or emergency food shelf.  On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday the rules of FASTING AND ABSTINENCE apply.

The Lenten Schedule is as follows:

    1.  ASH WEDNESDAY – February 22, 2012
